ISO 55000 documents

The ISO 55000 family is the first set of International Standards for Asset Management. It emerged from the success of the BSI/IAM Publicly Available Specification PAS 55. The ISO 55000 standards comprise:

  • ISO 55000 will specify the overview, concepts and terminology in Asset Management.
  • ISO 55001 will define the requirements for a "management system" for Asset Management.
  • ISO 55002 provides interpretation and implementation guidance for such a management system.

Participants and status

The standards were developed by ISO Project Committee 251 (ISO PC251), with the following participants:
Full participants: Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, Peru, Portugal, South Africa. Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, USA, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom
Observer status: Armenia, Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Iraq, Israel, Malaysia, Morocco, New Zealand, Norway, Slovakia, Thailand

Assessments and Road mapping

ISO/IEC 17021-5 is the confirmed requirement for assessors and certifying bodies to have specific asset management knowledge in order to audit against the requirements of ISO 55001. This will help to ensure that assessors will recognise good practices when they see them, and also identify gaps and shortfalls correctly. In contrast with other management system standards, ISO 55001 explicitly requires demonstration of actual practices (not just the existence of processes and manuals). This is why it is so essential to use an assessor with real and deep experience of asset management.

Asset Management Assessments, Gap Analysis and Strategic Road mapping

All organisations have existing capabilities in the management of their assets, however this can be disjointed, short-term focused and not evidently connecting the business priorities with the day-to-day operational activities. An objective, independent review of the current capabilities is very valuable, therefore, to identify what is already good and what can be improved. ISO 55001 provides an excellent basis of required good practices, and the IAM has developed and published a standardised 'Maturity Scale' to ensure consistency of definitions and benchmarking potential.
